Hoy, según el calendario tradicional romano de 1962, celebramos la fiesta de San Wenceslao, duque y mártir (S. Wenceslai Ducis et Martyris). San Wenceslao nació alrededor del año 907 y fue duque de Bohemia. Recibió una profunda formación cristiana, principalmente por influencia de su abuela santa Ludmila, y dedicó su gobierno a fortalecer la fe cristiana en medio de un contexto político y cultural aún marcado por el paganismo. Wenceslao se esmeró en promover la justicia, la caridad y la paz en sus tierras, así como en apoyar a la Iglesia y fundar numerosas iglesias y monasterios. Su reinado, sin embargo, fue breve y marcado por intrigas familiares, especialmente la oposición abierta de su hermano Boleslao, quien acabó conspirando para asesinarlo. San Wenceslao fue martirizado por su hermano en el año 929 o 935 (las fechas varían según las fuentes), mientras se dirigía a la iglesia para asistir a Misa, lo que lo señala como mártir de Cristo. Pronto fue venerado como santo tanto por su pueblo, que lo consideraba modelo de gobernante cristiano, como por la Iglesia universal.
