Der Heilige Josaphat (eigentlich Johannes Kuncewicz) war ein bedeutender Bischof und Märtyrer, der im 17. Jahrhundert lebte. Geboren in Włodzimierz (im heutigen Ukraine/Weißrussland), trat er in den Basilianerorden ein und widmete sich als Priester und später als Bischof von Polozk der Einigung der orthodoxen Christen mit der katholischen Kirche, wie sie durch die Union von Brest (1596) angestrebt wurde. Josaphat setzte sich mit Hingabe und großem pastoralen Eifer für die Einheit und Versöhnung ein, was ihn jedoch zur Zielscheibe politischer und religiöser Gegner machte. Seine unermüdlichen Bemühungen, Ausgleich zu schaffen und Irrlehren zu bekämpfen, führten 1623 zu seiner gewaltsamen Ermordung in Vitebsk: Er wurde von einem wütenden Mob getötet und gilt daher als Märtyrer der Einheit.
Die Kirche ehrt Josaphat besonders als Fürsprecher für die Einheit der Christen, insbesondere zwischen Ost- und Westkirche, und als Vorbild glühender Glaubenstreue bis zum Tod. Die liturgische Feier erinnert immer wieder an seinen außergewöhnlichen Opfergeist, seine verzeihende Liebe und den leidenschaftlichen Einsatz für Christus und Seine Kirche. Der heutige Festtag ist Ausdruck der beständigen Wertschätzung für diejenigen, die die Wunden der Kirchenspaltung durch Glauben, Duldsamkeit und Opferwillen zu heilen suchten. Josaphats Lebenszeugnis inspiriert auch heute dazu, sich der wahren Einheit in Liebe zu öffnen und unbeirrt am katholischen Glauben festzuhalten.
