Am 15. Juli feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des hl. Heinrichs, römisch-deutscher Kaiser und Bekenner. Heinrich II., geboren gegen Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts, entstammt dem bayerischen Adelsgeschlecht der Ottonen und wurde im Jahr 1002 zum König des Ostfrankenreichs sowie 1014 von Papst Benedikt VIII. in Rom zum Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches gekrönt. In seiner Regentschaft verband Heinrich das Streben nach christlich-königlicher Gerechtigkeit mit der tiefen Sorge um die Erneuerung der Kirche und festigte das Bündnis von Kaisertum und Papsttum auf Grundlage des Gottesgnadentums. Als Förderer der Kirchenreform unterstützte er Klöster und gründete zahlreiche Bistümer, was ihm den Ruf eines frommen und gerechten Herrschers einbrachte. Privat lebte er asketisch, zeigte sich sehr wohltätig und führte mit seiner Gattin Kunigunde eine vorbildlich ehelos-asketische Ehe. Bereits bald nach seinem Tod verehrte das gläubige Volk Heinrich als Heiligen, und Papst Eugen III. sprach ihn 1146 heilig. Sein liturgisches Fest wurde allen deutschsprachigen Diözesen bald verbindlich und fand 1631 Eingang in den allgemeinen römischen Kalender. Die traditionelle Liturgie ehrt ihn als Beispiel für einen heiligmäßigen weltlichen Herrscher, dessen Einsatz für Kirche und Reich bis heute als vorbildlich gilt. Im Kalender der traditionellen römischen Liturgie wird Heinrich als "Kaiser und Bekenner" besonders wegen seines persönlichen Glaubenszeugnisses und seine Rolle als Förderer des katholischen Lebens gefeiert.
