Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 das Fest der heiligen Margareta-Maria Alacoque, Jungfrau. Die 1647 in Burgund geborene Margareta-Maria trat in jungen Jahren dem Orden der Heimsuchung Mariens (Salesianerinnen) bei. Sie ist besonders bekannt für die ihr zuteil gewordenen Visionen, in denen ihr das Heiligste Herz Jesu erschien. Durch diese mystischen Erfahrungen wurde sie zur großen Verbreiterin der Herz-Jesu-Verehrung, die seitdem in der gesamten katholischen Kirche fest verankert ist. Trotz vieler Widerstände, auch innerhalb ihres eigenen Klosters, hielt sie standhaft am Auftrag fest, die Liebe und Barmherzigkeit Christi durch die Verehrung seines Herzens zu verkünden.
Das 19. und frühe 20. Jahrhundert sah eine besondere Blüte der Herz-Jesu-Frömmigkeit als Zeichen der Hoffnung und als geistliches Gegengift zur Säkularisierung. Die Aufnahme ihres Festes in den römischen Kalender, zunehmend ab dem 19. Jahrhundert, spiegelt diese Entwicklung wider und ehrt ihren Beitrag zum geistlichen Leben der Kirche. Ihr Gedenktag, der 17. Oktober, wurde im traditionellen Kalender als dritter Rang (III. Klasse) festgelegt und steht so in besonderer Nähe zum Herz-Jesu-Freitag sowie anderen Festen, die die Liebe Gottes betonen. Die liturgische Farbe Weiß unterstreicht die Freude und Reinheit, mit denen Margareta-Maria ihre Berufung lebte.
Das Fest im traditionellen Kalender lädt alle Gläubigen dazu ein, sich erneut der barmherzigen Liebe des Herzens Jesu zu öffnen und Margareta-Marias geistlichem Beispiel nachzufolgen, das von Demut, Opfergeist und Treue gegenüber göttlichen Eingebungen geprägt ist.
