Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 das Fest des hl. Petrus von Alcantara, Bekenners. Petrus wurde um 1499 im spanischen Alcántara geboren und trat schon früh in den Franziskanerorden (Observanten) ein. Durch sein asketisches Leben, große Demut und tiefes Gebet gewann er große geistliche Autorität und wurde zu einem bedeutenden Reformer innerhalb seines Ordens. Besonders bekannt ist Petrus für seine außergewöhnliche Strenge gegen sich selbst: Sein Fasten und sein Schlafentzug galten als außerordentlich, doch betonte er immer die Liebe und Sanftmut im Umgang mit anderen. Während seines Lebens war er ein großer Förderer der franziskanischen Observanz und wurde enger geistlicher Begleiter und Ratgeber der hl. Teresa von Ávila, die ihn als einen der größten Heiligen ihrer Zeit ansah. Sein Wirken als geistlicher Vater in einer Zeit umfassender innerer und äußerer Herausforderungen für die Kirche erwies sich als besonders heilsam, da der religiöse Eifer und die Reformkraft vieler Gemeinschaften Neues errangen. Die katholische Kirche verehrt Petrus von Alcantara deshalb nicht nur wegen seiner außerordentlichen Bußwerke, sondern vor allem wegen seiner Liebe zur kontemplativen Sammlung. Er starb 1562 und wurde schon 1669 heiliggesprochen. Der traditionelle römische Kalender ehrt ihn am 19. Oktober als Beispiel für Selbstverleugnung, Buße und Treue zur geistlichen Erneuerung. Dieses Fest wird also heute im traditionellen Kalender gefeiert (nach der Ordnung von 1962 und den Rubriken von 1960), um sein Werk und seinen Einfluss auf die geistliche Erneuerung der Kirche im 16. Jahrhundert zu würdigen.
