Am 19. September feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 das Fest des heiligen Januarius (San Gennaro), Bischof von Benevent, sowie seiner Gefährten, die als Märtyrer verehrt werden. Januarius lebte vermutlich im 3. Jahrhundert und wurde während der letzten großen Christenverfolgung unter Kaiser Diokletian hingerichtet. Die genauen Einzelheiten seines Lebens sind historisch unsicher, doch die Verehrung des Heiligen ist schon sehr alt und weit verbreitet; insbesondere in Neapel, wo Januarius als Patron der Stadt verehrt wird. Legendarische Erzählungen berichten, dass er zusammen mit mehreren Gefährten – unter ihnen Diakon Festus und Lector Desiderius – wegen seines christlichen Glaubens verhaftet und schließlich durch Enthauptung getötet wurde. Seine Reliquien, insbesondere das berühmte Blut, das sich nach Überlieferung mehrmals im Jahr verflüssigt, sind bis heute ein Zeichen der Verehrung und Hoffnung für die Gläubigen.
Die Aufnahme des Festes am 19. September in den traditionellen Kalender unterstreicht die tiefe Verbundenheit der Kirche mit den Märtyrern der frühen Christenheit. Die unerschütterliche Treue zum Glauben und die Bereitschaft, selbst das Leben hinzugeben, stehen beispielhaft für das katholische Verständnis von Heiligkeit.
