Am 23. Oktober feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (nach dem Messbuch von 1962) das Fest des heiligen Antonius Maria Claret, Bischof und Bekenner. Antonius Maria Claret wurde 1807 in Spanien geboren und war in einer Zeit des Umbruchs und des religiösen Verfalls von tiefer apostolischer Leidenschaft erfüllt. Nach seiner Priesterweihe zeichnete er sich bald durch einen asketischen Lebensstil und außergewöhnliche Seeleneifrigkeit aus. 1849 gründete er die 'Kongregation der Missionare, Söhne des Unbefleckten Herzens Mariens' (Claretiner), deren Spiritualität sich besonders durch Marienverehrung, missionarischen Eifer und Treue zur Kirche auszeichnet.
Antonius Maria Claret wurde 1850 zum Erzbischof von Santiago de Cuba ernannt und führte dort umfangreiche pastorale Reformen durch, wobei er sich besonders für Bildung, soziale Gerechtigkeit und die Verteidigung der Armen einsetzte. Seinem Wirken begegneten sowohl Bewunderung als auch Widerstände; sogar mehrere Mordanschläge überstand er unversehrt. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Spanien wurde er zum Beichtvater der spanischen Königin ernannt, litt aber auch hier unter Verfolgungen und Missverständnissen. Sein tiefes Vertrauen auf Gott und seine kindliche Hingabe an die Gottesmutter prägten sein ganzes Leben und öffneten vielen Menschen den Weg zu Christus. Die Aufnahme des Festes im traditionellen liturgischen Kalender verdeutlicht die bedeutende Rolle dieses Heiligen im 19. Jahrhundert als Vorbild apostolischen Eifers, missionarischer Dynamik und übernatürlicher Liebe zur Kirche. Die Feier am 23. Oktober erinnert die Gläubigen im traditionellen katholischen Ritus daran, am Beispiel des hl. Antonius Maria Claret in der Nachfolge Christi und im Dienst an den Bedürftigen zu wachsen.
