Am 28. Juli feiert der überlieferte römische Kalender von 1962 das Gedächtnis der heiligen Märtyrer Nazarius und Celsus sowie der heiligen Päpste Victor I. (Märtyrer) und Innozenz I. (Bekenner). Nazarius und Celsus sind besonders durch die Überlieferung um ihre Reliquien bekannt, die der heilige Ambrosius im vierten Jahrhundert in Mailand auffand – die Einzelheiten ihres Martyriums sind weitgehend legendarisch und unsicher, aber sie werden als frühe Glaubenszeugen der Kirche verehrt, die ihr Leben für Christus hingaben. Papst Victor I. regierte die Kirche im späten 2. Jahrhundert und wird für seine Bemühungen um die Einheit in der Osterfestfrage und für seine Verteidigung des Glaubens gegen Häresien geschätzt; sein Martyrium ist jedoch historisch nicht eindeutig belegt. Papst Innozenz I. leitete die Kirche Anfang des 5. Jahrhunderts in bewegter Zeit, besonders während der Bedrängnisse durch die Goten und der theologischen Herausforderungen jener Epoche; er wird wegen seines festen Bekenntnisses zum katholischen Glauben geehrt, starb jedoch eines natürlichen Todes. Die Liste dieser Heiligen am selben Tag hat ihren Ursprung in der gemeinsamen Übertragung alter Martyrologien und liturgischer Überlieferungen, in der die kirchliche Verehrung besonders herausragender Blutzeugen und Glaubensbekenner zum Ausdruck kommt. Der Tag wird im Vetus Ordo als Fest III. Klasse begangen und lenkt den Blick der Gläubigen auf die Standhaftigkeit im Glauben sowie auf die Kontinuität der heiligen Tradition von den ersten Märtyrern bis zu den großen Bekennern unter den Päpsten.
