Am 3. September feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Papstes Pius X., Bekenner. Giuseppe Sarto, geboren 1835 in Italien, stieg aus einfachen Verhältnissen in das höchste Amt der Kirche auf und diente von 1903 bis zu seinem Tod 1914 als Papst. Sein Pontifikat war geprägt vom Leitwort „Alles in Christus erneuern“ („Instaurare omnia in Christo“), und er ist besonders dafür bekannt, die tägliche und frühzeitige Kommunion für Kinder zu fördern, sowie die kirchliche Liturgie zu erneuern und zu vereinfachen. In einer Zeit, die durch gesellschaftliche Umwälzungen, Säkularisierung und neue theologische Strömungen geprägt war, setzte Pius X. klare Zeichen gegen den Modernismus – eine Strömung, die er als große Gefahr für die Reinheit des Glaubens betrachtete. Er verfasste Dekrete zur Stärkung der katholischen Lehre, reformierte das Kirchenrecht und förderte das Katechismusstudium. Sein Herz schlug zeitlebens für die Seelsorge an den kleinen Leuten, und seine Demut und pastorale Liebe machten ihn weit über Italien hinaus beliebt. Der heutige 3. September wurde bei seiner Heiligsprechung 1954 als liturgischer Gedenktag gewählt, da sein Todestag (20. August) oft mit den liturgischen Feiern der August-Oktav kollidierte und aus pastoralen Gründen verlegt wurde. Im traditionellen Kalender wird er als Bekenner-Papst geehrt, um seine Treue zur Wahrheit und seinen Einsatz für die Heiligkeit der Kirche hervorzuheben. Christen aller Zeiten sehen in ihm ein Vorbild für Glaubenstreue, Mut und pastorale Hingabe.
