Am 5. September feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (Missale von 1962) das Fest des heiligen Laurentius Justiniani, Bischof und Bekenner. Laurentius wurde um 1381 in Venedig geboren und trat schon früh in den Kreis der Augustiner-Chorherren von San Giorgio in Alga ein. Er zeichnete sich durch tiefe Frömmigkeit, Demut und eine ausgeprägte Liebe zur Kontemplation und zum Gebet aus. Als überzeugter Reformer strebte er eine Erneuerung des religiösen Lebens seiner Zeit an, wobei er stets die Armen und Bedürftigen im Blick hatte. Im Jahr 1433 wurde er zum ersten Patriarchen von Venedig ernannt, nachdem Venedig von der Diözese Castello zu einer Patriarchalsitz erhoben worden war. In seinem bischöflichen Dienst legte Laurentius besonderen Wert auf pastorale Fürsorge, gefördert durch die regelmäßige Spendung der Sakramente, Predigttätigkeit und den persönlichen Kontakt mit den Gläubigen. Seine spirituellen Schriften, die von innerer Sammlung und mystischer Erfahrung zeugen, fanden über seine Lebenszeit hinaus große Verbreitung und beeinflussten spätere Generationen der katholischen Mystik.
Laurentius Justiniani starb im Jahr 1456 und wurde 1690 von Papst Alexander VIII. heiliggesprochen. Seine Heiligkeit wurde besonders in seiner Heimatstadt Venedig geschätzt, doch sein Fest fand Eingang in den römischen Generalkalender, um seiner Vorbildfunktion als Hirte und Reformator zu gedenken. Im traditionellen Kalender wird sein Fest als Fest III. Klasse begangen, was seine Bedeutung als herausragender Bischof und Glaubenszeuge in der Geschichte der Kirche unterstreicht.
