Am heutigen Tag begeht die traditionelle römische Liturgie das Fest der Geburt der allerseligsten Jungfrau Maria, bekannt als Mariä Geburt. Dieses Hochfest der zweiten Klasse hat in der Kirche einen besonders ehrwürdigen Platz, da die Geburt der Mutter Gottes als Ausgangspunkt für das kommende Heil und für das Erlösungswerk Christi gesehen wird. Die Verehrung dieses Festes lässt sich bereits in den ersten Jahrhunderten nachweisen, insbesondere in der Ostkirche und in Jerusalem, wo eine Basilika an der überlieferten Geburtsstelle Mariens errichtet wurde. Im Westen wurde das Fest im 7. Jahrhundert eingeführt und verbreitete sich rasch, besonders nachdem Papst Sergius I. eine feierliche Prozession am 8. September anordnete.
Die Feier der Geburt Mariens steht in engem Zusammenhang mit der Menschwerdung des Herrn, denn Gott bereitet durch Maria der Welt das Geschenk des Erlösers. Der traditionelle Kalender hebt die Bedeutung dieses Festes hervor, indem er es jedes Jahr am achten September begeht – der Zahl Acht kommt eine symbolische Bedeutung zu, da sie in der Liturgie oft für einen Neubeginn steht. Mariä Geburt ist daher geprägt von der Hoffnung auf Erneuerung und von der Freude über die nahende Ankunft Christi. Spirituell ist das Fest geprägt von der Betrachtung Mariens als Urbild der vollkommenen Hingabe an Gottes Willen. Die katholische Tradition sieht in ihrer Geburt ein besonderes Wirken der Gnade Gottes, da Maria in einzigartiger Weise zur Mutter des Erlösers erwählt wurde. Mit diesem Fest beginnt auf gewisse Weise der Zyklus unseres Erlösungsgeheimnisses.
