Am 12. August feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest der heiligen Clara von Assisi, Jungfrau und Ordensgründerin. Die heilige Clara wurde um 1193 in Assisi geboren und wuchs in einer frommen adeligen Familie auf. Bereits in jungen Jahren zog sie das Vorbild des heiligen Franziskus an, und sie entschied sich, dem Ruf Christi in radikaler Armut und völliger Hingabe zu folgen. Im Jahr 1212 verließ sie heimlich ihr Elternhaus, um sich unter den Schutz des heiligen Franziskus zu stellen. Bald darauf gründete sie im Kloster San Damiano die Gemeinschaft der "Armen Frauen", später als Klarissen bekannt.
Claras Leben war geprägt von tiefer Kontemplation, konsequenter Armut und unerschütterlichem Glauben. Sie führte ein strenges, beschauliches Leben und unterstützte, durch ihr Gebet und ihre geistliche Leitung, nicht nur ihre Mitschwestern, sondern auch die ersten Minderbrüder. Besonders hervorzuheben ist ihre standhafte Verteidigung der "Armut des Evangeliums" gegen so manche kirchliche und familiäre Widerstände. Sie starb im Jahr 1253; zwei Jahre später wurde sie heiliggesprochen.
Der traditionelle römische Kalender ehrt die heilige Clara am 12. August und hebt damit ihre zentrale Rolle als weibliches Gegenstück des heiligen Franziskus hervor. Ihr Fest, weiß gekennzeichnet, erinnert die Gläubigen besonders an die Kraft der reinen Liebe zu Gott, die sich im Dienst an den Armen und im beständigen Gebet verwirklicht. Clara ist die Patronin der Fernsehleute und vieler weiterer Anliegen, und ihr Lebenszeugnis inspiriert bis heute zahllose Menschen zur Nachfolge Christi.
