Der 13. Oktober ist im traditionellen römischen Kalender (1962) dem heiligen Eduard, König und Bekenner, gewidmet. Eduard der Bekenner war König von England im 11. Jahrhundert und ist besonders als einer der letzten angelsächsischen Herrscher Englands bekannt, bevor die normannische Eroberung das Land grundlegend veränderte. Seine Regentschaft, die von 1042 bis zu seinem Tod 1066 dauerte, war von Friedensliebe, Gerechtigkeit und Frömmigkeit geprägt. Eduard suchte das Heil seines Volkes und war bekannt für seine Großzügigkeit gegenüber den Armen und seine Hingabe an das Gebet, weshalb er als Bekenner und nicht als Märtyrer verehrt wird. Legendäre Elemente ranken sich um sein Leben, vor allem seine Frömmigkeit und die Wunder, die ihm nach seinem Tod zugeschrieben werden. 1161 wurde er von Papst Alexander III. heiliggesprochen, und sein Grab in Westminster Abbey entwickelte sich zu einem wichtigen Wallfahrtsort. Die Kirche ehrt ihn insbesondere wegen seiner standhaften Treue zu Gott und wegen seines Beitrags zur Förderung der Kirche in England, auch durch den Bau der Westminster Abbey. Der Gedenktag wurde ursprünglich auf den 5. Januar gelegt, später aber, zum Anlass seiner feierlichen Übertragung ins neue Grab (Translation), auf den 13. Oktober verlegt, wo ihn der traditionelle römische Kalender weiterhin ehrt. Seine Verehrung als König, der nach christlichen Prinzipien regierte, unterstreicht die Bedeutung, die die Kirche dem Beispiel heiliger Laien und Herrscher beimisst.
