Am 17. August feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des hl. Hyazinthus, Bekenners. Hyazinth wurde um das Jahr 1185 in Polen geboren und trat in Rom in den Dominikanerorden (Orden der Predigerbrüder) ein, kurz nach dessen Gründung durch den hl. Dominikus. Mit glühendem Eifer verkündete er das Evangelium zunächst in Polen und später in weiten Teilen Mittel- und Osteuropas, besonders in Russland, Skandinavien und Litauen. Zahlreiche Legenden berichten von Wundern, die er im Vertrauen auf Christus wirkte, darunter das berühmte Wunder, bei dem er bei einem Mongolenüberfall in Kiew das Allerheiligste und eine Marienstatue rettete und über den Fluss Dnjepr getragen haben soll – ein Zeichen seiner tiefen Marien- und Eucharistiefrömmigkeit.
Hyazinth ist als einer der großen Missionare des Mittelalters hervorgetreten; sein Wirken trug maßgeblich zur Ausbreitung des christlichen Glaubens in oftmals noch heidnischen Gebieten Osteuropas bei. Die Kirche ehrt ihn als "Apostel des Nordens" und verehrt ihn als einen mutigen Bekenner, der in der Treue zu Christus und zur Kirche auch unter lebensbedrohlichen Umständen standhaft blieb. Dass sein Fest im traditionellen römischen Kalender an diesem Tag begangen wird, erinnert an sein beispielhaftes Leben im Dienst an der Verkündigung und an den Mut, das Evangelium bis an die Grenzen der bekannten Welt zu tragen. Sein Rang als Fest III. Klasse entspricht der Wertschätzung, die die Kirche ihm als Missionar und Vorbild im christlichen Glauben entgegenbringt.
