Am 18. Juli feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Kamillus von Lellis, Bekenners. Kamillus wurde 1550 in der Nähe von Neapel geboren und erlebte in seiner Jugend eine schwierige Zeit, die von Krankheit und einem unsteten Lebenswandel geprägt war. Erst nach einer tiefen geistlichen Umkehr wandte er sich dem Dienst an Kranken zu und trat zunächst in das Krankenhaus von San Giacomo in Rom ein. Sein besonderes Charisma lag in der liebevollen Pflege kranker und sterbender Menschen. Er gründete die Kongregation der Kamillianer (Orden der Diener der Kranken), deren Mitglieder ein rotes Kreuz auf der Brust tragen und sich der Krankenpflege widmen, besonders auch im Dienst an Pestkranken und Verwundeten in Kriegen.
Der heilige Kamillus verband tiefe Frömmigkeit mit außergewöhnlicher Tatkraft und betrachtete den Kranken in besonderer Weise als Christus selbst. Sein missionarisches Wirken trug dazu bei, das menschliche Gesicht der katholischen Caritas zu prägen. Er wurde 1746 von Papst Benedikt XIV. heiliggesprochen und später gemeinsam mit Johannes von Gott als Patron der Kranken und der in der Krankenpflege Tätigen eingesetzt.
Die traditionelle Liturgie ehrt Kamillus daher nicht nur als Vorbild selbstloser Nächstenliebe, sondern stellt ihn auch als Ermutigung für alle Gläubigen dar, Kranke als Brüder und Schwestern Christi zu erkennen. Dass sein Fest im Kalender beibehalten wurde, ist Ausdruck der Wertschätzung für die Barmherzigkeit und den selbstlosen Dienst in der Kirche – Tugenden, die Kamillus in einzigartiger Weise vorgelebt hat.
