Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Johannes Eudes, Bekenners. Johannes Eudes wurde 1601 in der Normandie geboren und prägte das geistliche Leben Frankreichs des 17. Jahrhunderts nachhaltig. Sein Lebenswerk bestand in der Erneuerung des Klerus und der Förderung der Herz-Jesu- und Herz-Mariä-Verehrung, die bis heute im katholischen Leben bedeutsam ist. Als Prediger, Schriftsteller und Gründer widmete er sich besonders der Ausbildung von Priestern; zu diesem Zweck gründete er 1643 die Kongregation von Jesus und Maria (Eudisten) und später den Orden Unserer Frau von der Liebe, der sich der Betreuung gefallener Frauen annahm. Johannes Eudes wird als Förderer einer lebendigen und missionarischen Spiritualität verehrt, der die Gläubigen zur Hingabe an die Herzen Jesu und Mariä aufrief. Die Aufnahme seines Festes am 19. August in den römischen Kalender erfolgte im 20. Jahrhundert und würdigt seine Rolle als Reformer und geistlicher Lehrer; im traditionellen Kalender von 1962 wird seiner am Weißen (festlichen) Mittwoch nach dem 12. Sonntag nach Pfingsten gedacht. Sein Leben zeugt von tiefer Treue zur Kirche und großem Eifer für die Seelsorge, weshalb er als Vorbild für Priester und Laien gleichermaßen gilt.
