Am 20. August feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (Ausgabe von 1962) das Fest des heiligen Bernhard von Clairvaux, Abt und Kirchenlehrer. Der heilige Bernhard wurde um 1090 in Burgund geboren und trat in jungen Jahren in das Zisterzienserkloster Cîteaux ein. Dort beeindruckte er durch seine tiefe Frömmigkeit und seine Überzeugungskraft viele, darunter auch zahlreiche Adelige, die ihm folgten. 1115 entsandte man ihn, das neue Kloster Clairvaux zu gründen, wo er als erster Abt wirkte. Bernhard war eine der prägendsten Gestalten des Mittelalters: Sein Einfluss reichte weit über die Zisterzienser hinaus und prägte Kirche, Theologie und die Spiritualität seiner Zeit.
Seine tiefe Liebe zu Christus, besonders zur Menschheit des Herrn, und seine Marienfrömmigkeit ziehen sich durch seine zahlreichen Predigten und Schriften, etwa die berühmten Homilien über das Hohelied oder seine Briefe. Bernhard wirkte auch als Berater von Päpsten, Vermittler bei politischen Konflikten und eifriger Verteidiger der kirchlichen Lehre. Das traditionelle Fest am 20. August erinnert an seinen Todestag und würdigt sein Leben als Vorbild in Hingabe, Demut und Liebe zur Kirche. Aufgrund seiner Theologie, seiner Rolle in der Reform der klösterlichen Observanz und der Verteidigung des Glaubens wurde Bernhard von Papst Pius VIII. 1830 zum Kirchenlehrer erhoben. Im traditionellen Kalender besitzt sein Fest den liturgischen Rang eines dritten Festgrades, was seine herausragende Bedeutung zeigt.
