Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Johannes von Kenty, Bekenner. Johannes wurde um das Jahr 1390 in Kęty, einer kleinen Stadt in Polen, geboren. Nach einem akademisch hervorragenden Studium an der Universität Krakau wurde er dort Professor und später Priester. Sein Leben war geprägt von einer tiefen Liebe zur Wissenschaft, aber zugleich auch von einer großen persönlichen Demut und caritativen Wirksamkeit. Johannes war bekannt für seine Frömmigkeit, Strenge gegen sich selbst und überaus großzügige Mildtätigkeit gegenüber den Armen. Selbst im Ruf großer Gelehrsamkeit stehend, blieb er dennoch stets bescheiden und verteidigte unbeirrt die katholische Lehre.
Sein Fest findet auf dem traditionellen Kalender heute, am 20. Oktober, einen festen Platz. Der heilige Johannes von Kenty zeigte, wie man als Gelehrter und Priester ein tief geistliches Leben führen und zum Vorbild der christlichen Demut und Nächstenliebe werden kann. Er starb 1473 in Krakau. Viele Wunder und Heilungen wurden nach seinem Tod auf seine Fürsprache hin berichtet, was zu seiner Verehrung beitrug. Papst Clemens XIII. sprach ihn 1767 heilig, und die traditionelle Kirche ehrt ihn besonders als Patron der Lehrer, Priester und der Universitäten. Der liturgische Rang als Fest III. Klasse unterstreicht sein vorbildhaftes, aber volksnahes Heiligenleben.
