Am 23. Juli feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Apollinaris, Bischof und Märtyrer. Der heilige Apollinaris gehört zu den frühesten bekannten Glaubenszeugen der Kirche in Italien; die Überlieferung verbindet ihn mit dem Apostel Petrus, der ihn zum ersten Bischof von Ravenna geweiht haben soll. Apollinaris wird als eifriger Hirte beschrieben, der unermüdlich das Evangelium verkündete und für den christlichen Glauben schwere Leiden erduldete. Die Einzelheiten seines Lebens sind nur teilweise gesichert und mischen sich mit legendären Berichten, doch ist sein Märtyrertod durch wiederholte Verfolgungen, schließlich in Ravenna, fester Bestandteil der christlichen Erinnerung an ihn.
