Der heilige Clemens, Papst und Märtyrer, nimmt einen herausragenden Platz unter den frühesten Nachfolgern des heiligen Petrus ein. Als dritter Nachfolger des Apostelfürsten leitete er die Kirche von Rom vermutlich am Ende des 1. Jahrhunderts. Viele Einzelheiten seines Lebens sind unsicher oder legendenhaft überliefert, doch das älteste und sicherste Zeugnis seiner Person finden wir in dem sogenannten "Clemensbrief" an die Gemeinde in Korinth. Dieses Schreiben zeigt einen Mann von großer Autorität, Besonnenheit und tiefer Glaubensüberzeugung, der die Einheit und den Frieden in der Kirche um jeden Preis fördern wollte. Der Überlieferung nach erlitt Clemens das Martyrium, vermutlich durch Verbannung und Tod in der Zeit der Christenverfolgungen, wobei spätere Legenden berichten, er sei mit einem Anker um den Hals ins Meer gestürzt worden.
Die Aufnahme seines Festes an diesem Tag hat eine lange Tradition in der römischen Liturgie. Bereits in der Antike wurde sein Grab an der Via Flaminia verehrt, und schon früh galt er als wichtiger Fürbitter für Einheit und Festigkeit im Glauben. Die geistliche Bedeutung des heiligen Clemens liegt darin, als Papst und Märtyrer ein Vorbild für das Festhalten an Christus auch in schweren Zeiten der Bedrängnis zu sein. Seine Fürsprache wird besonders in Zeiten gesucht, in denen die Kirche nach innerem Frieden und Treue strebt. Das Fest ruft dazu auf, den Glauben und die Lehre der Apostel getreu zu bewahren und wie Clemens im Dienst an der Einheit der Kirche standhaft zu bleiben.
