Gedenktag des heiligen Chrysogonus, Märtyrer

Der heilige Johannes vom Kreuz (San Juan de la Cruz), geboren 1542 in Kastilien, zählt zu den größten Mystikern und Kirchenlehrern der Kirche. Als Karmelit trat er in jungen Jahren dem Orden bei und wurde vom tiefen Wunsch nach der vollkommenen Gottesvereinigung geprägt. Gemeinsam mit der heiligen Teresa von Ávila wirkte er als Hauptfigur bei der Reform des Karmelitenordens und begründete den sogenannten Unbeschuhten Karmelitenzweig. Aufgrund seiner Reformbemühungen erlitt er viele Widerstände, ja sogar Gefangenschaft, ertrug dies jedoch in großer Geduld und Demut.

In seinen Schriften, insbesondere dem "Dunklen Nacht der Seele" und dem "Aufstieg zum Berge Karmel", schildert er eindrucksvoll die inneren Wege der Seele zu Gott, das Ringen mit eigenen Schwächen und die Hingabe an Gottes Willen. Johannes‘ Lehre betont die absolute Vorrangstellung der göttlichen Liebe, die Läuterung des Herzens und die radikale Nachfolge Christi, wodurch er zu einem Leitstern für das geistliche Leben vieler Generationen wurde. Sein Einfluss reicht weit über die Grenzen des Karmelitenordens hinaus und hat die gesamte Spiritualität der Kirche geprägt.

Die Kirche ehrt ihn an diesem Tag als Bekenner und Kirchenlehrer, um sein Beispiel der Hingabe und seine tiefgründige Theologie in besonderer Weise zu würdigen. Der Festtag erinnert die Gläubigen daran, dass die volle Einheit mit Gott – umgesetzt im täglichen Leben und im Gebet – das höchste Ziel des christlichen Daseins ist.
