Am 26. November wird das Fest des heiligen Silvester, Abt von Montecassino, begangen. Silvester lebte im 8. Jahrhundert in Italien und ist vor allem als Vorbild benediktinischer Hingabe und strenger Klosterzucht bekannt geworden. Ursprünglich in einer wohlhabenden Familie geboren, verzichtete er früh auf weltliche Güter und trat in das Kloster von Montecassino ein, das auf den hl. Benedikt von Nursia zurückgeht. Seine Hingabe an das klösterliche Leben, geprägt von Gebet, Arbeit und geistlicher Disziplin, machten ihn zur anerkannten Autorität in Fragen monastischer Regel und Erziehung.
Als Abt von Montecassino führte Silvester die Gemeinschaft durch schwierige Zeiten der Unsicherheit und erneuerte die geistliche Strenge des Hauses. Unter seiner Leitung stand die Einhaltung der Benediktregel und die Förderung der Bildung der Mönche im Mittelpunkt. Obwohl viele Details seines Lebens im Dunkeln liegen oder von Legenden überlagert sind, bleibt sein Beispiel eine Mahnung zur Treue, zum Gebet und zur beständigen Besserung.
Die Kirche ehrt ihn, weil er das monastische Ideal in oft stürmischen Zeiten verkörperte und den Fortbestand des abendländischen Mönchtums sicherte. Sein Gedenktag möchte an die bleibende Bedeutung des Gebetslebens, der Demut und der geistlichen Führung erinnern. Der liturgische Rang dieses Tages hebt hervor, dass sein Leben und Wirken für das kirchliche und monastische Leben als nachahmenswert betrachtet wird.
