Am 18. Sonntag nach Pfingsten, wie er im traditionellen römischen Kalender von 1962 (Vetus Ordo Missae) begangen wird, richtet sich die Liturgie weiterhin auf die fortdauernde Wirkung des Heiligen Geistes im Leben der Kirche und der Gläubigen. Der Pfingstkreis innerhalb des Kirchenjahres ist die längste und zugleich spirituell reichste Zeit, in der die Gläubigen zur Vertiefung ihres Glaubenslebens im Licht der an Pfingsten empfangenen Gabe des Heiligen Geistes eingeladen werden. Dieser Sonntag ist Teil dieser festlosen oder sogenannten „grünen“ Zeit, in der das tägliche christliche Leben und Wachstum im Glauben Thema sind. Die Lesungen und Gebete an diesem Sonntag betonen üblicherweise Aspekte der Barmherzigkeit Gottes, der Heilung und der Notwendigkeit, im Glauben auszuharren, wobei oft das Evangelium von der Heilung des Gelähmten in Kapharnaum aufgegriffen wird, das auch die Macht Christi zur Vergebung der Sünden unterstreicht.
Im liturgischen Ablauf des traditionellen Ritus nimmt der 18. Sonntag nach Pfingsten, wie alle Sonntage nach Pfingsten, einen festen Platz zwischen den Festzeiten ein und steht besonders für die Bewahrung und Fortführung des in Ostern und Pfingsten erhaltenen Gnadenlebens. Die grüne liturgische Farbe dieses Sonntags symbolisiert das Wachstum und die Hoffnung, die aus der christlichen Existenz erwachsen. Der traditionelle Kalender hält an diesem Tag fest, um die Gläubigen immer wieder an die Bedeutung des beharrlichen Lebens aus dem Glauben und an die fortdauernde Gegenwart des Heiligen Geistes zu erinnern. Dies ist der 18. Sonntag nach Pfingsten im traditionellen (1962) Römischen Kalender.
