Der heilige Wenzel, Herzog von Böhmen und Märtyrer, genießt in der Kirche einen besonderen Ehrenplatz und wird heute im traditionellen römischen Kalender (1962) als Heiliger gefeiert. Wenzel, aus dem Geschlecht der Přemysliden, wuchs im 10. Jahrhundert in einer Zeit tiefer religiöser und politischer Umbrüche auf. Seine Großmutter, die hl. Ludmilla, erzog ihn im christlichen Glauben, während sein Vater noch zwischen heidnischen und christlichen Einflüssen schwankte. Nach der Ermordung seines Vaters übernahm Wenzel bereits in jungen Jahren die Herrschaft über Böhmen und war bestrebt, das Christentum im Land zu festigen und das Volk in christlicher Liebe und Gerechtigkeit zu regieren. Bekannt für seine Milde und Barmherzigkeit gegenüber Armen und Bedürftigen, widersetzte er sich hartnäckig ungerechten Handlungen seiner Umgebung.
Sein Einsatz für das Evangelium und seine Unterstützung der Kirche brachten ihm jedoch auch Feindschaft ein, insbesondere von Seiten seines eigenen Bruders Boleslaus. Dieser wurde zum Instrument eines blutigen Komplotts: Am 28. September 935 oder nach einigen Quellen 929 wurde Wenzel auf dem Weg zur Kirche hinterhältig ermordet. Schon bald verehrte das Volk ihn als Märtyrer, während unzählige Legenden seinen Ruhm verbreiteten. Die Kirche sieht in Wenzel das Vorbild eines christlichen Herrschers, der sein Leben opferte, um den Glauben im eigenen Land zu schützen. Der traditionelle Kalender ehrt ihn an seinem Todestag und in Böhmen ist der hl. Wenzel Nationalheiliger, dessen moralische Autorität bis heute nachwirkt. Der liturgische Rang der III. Klasse verdeutlicht seine Bedeutung als Märtyrer und Landespatron.
