Am 30. September feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 das Fest des heiligen Hieronymus, Priester, Bekenner und Kirchenlehrer. Hieronymus (ca. 347–420) ist insbesondere für seine Übersetzung der Bibel in das Lateinische, die sogenannte Vulgata, bekannt. Diese Übersetzung wurde über mehr als ein Jahrtausend hinweg in der lateinischen Kirche als maßgebliche Bibelübersetzung verwendet und war grundlegend für Theologie, Liturgie und christliche Bildung im Abendland. Hieronymus wurde in Stridon an der Grenze zwischen Dalmatien und Pannonien geboren und war ein herausragender Gelehrter seiner Zeit. Nach einer spirituellen Wandlung in Rom führte ihn seine Suche nach Askese, Studium und Gebet schließlich nach Bethlehem, wo er bis zu seinem Tod lebte. Die Kirche ehrt ihn nicht nur als großen Bibelübersetzer, sondern auch als Verteidiger des orthodoxen Glaubens und der christlichen Moral, der mit seinen zahlreichen Schriften geistliche und theologische Impulse setzte. Sein Wirken fällt in eine Zeit, in der die Kirche sich intellektuell und geistlich neu aufstellte, um den Herausforderungen der Spätantike zu begegnen. Der 30. September als sein Todestag wurde traditionell für sein Fest gewählt, auch als Zeichen der bleibenden Bedeutung seiner exegetischen Arbeit für die Kirche. Die liturgische Feier im tridentinischen Kalender ist als Fest dritter Klasse eingestuft und erinnert an die zentrale Bedeutung von Schriftstudium und Treue zur Tradition. Es handelt sich um das Fest des traditionellen römischen Kalenders (1962).
