Samstag nach dem 5. Sonntag nach Pfingsten
Am heutigen Tag feiert die überlieferte römische Liturgie der traditionellen (1962) Ordnung das Gedächtnis der allerseligsten Jungfrau Maria am Samstag („Sanctæ Mariæ Sabbato“). Dieser Gedenktag ist eng mit der alten kirchlichen Praxis verbunden, an jedem Samstag die Muttergottes in besonderer Weise zu ehren. Die Verehrung Mariens an Samstagen geht bis ins frühe Mittelalter zurück und hat ihren Ursprung in der Überlieferung, dass Maria, nachdem Christus am Karfreitag gestorben war, am Karsamstag als Einzige im vollkommenen Glauben ausharrte. Sie wird daher als das Urbild der unverzagten Treue und als Hoffnung der Christen betrachtet, auch in Zeiten der Prüfung fest im Glauben zu stehen.
Die liturgische Feier am Samstag ist meist von niedrigerem liturgischem Rang (IV. Klasse), wird jedoch besonders in Klöstern, Stiften und Gemeinschaften gepflegt, die eine besondere Marienfrömmigkeit leben. Inhaltlich laden die Texte dieses Tages dazu ein, Maria als Mittlerin aller Gnaden zu verehren, sie um Fürsprache zu bitten und in ihrem unerschütterlichen Glauben ein Vorbild zu sehen. Das Weiß der liturgischen Farbe deutet auf Freude, Reinheit und den österlichen Charakter Mariens hin.
Der Gedenktag „Maria am Samstag“ verbindet die Liebe zur Gottesmutter mit den alltäglichen Mühen ihres Volkes – wie es in der Tradition heißt, ist sie auch an gewöhnlichen Tagen eine Zuflucht und Helferin. Die Beibehaltung dieses Gedächtnisses im traditionellen Kalender bezeugt die jahrhundertelange Liebe der Kirche zur Mutter Jesu und lädt alle Gläubigen ein, besonders an Samstagen ihre Fürsprache zu suchen und nach ihrem Vorbild zu leben.
