Am heutigen Tag feiert die traditionelle römische Liturgie (1962) das Fest des heiligen Irenäus, Bischof und Märtyrer. Irenäus wurde vermutlich im 2. Jahrhundert in Kleinasien geboren und war Schüler des hl. Polykarp, welcher wiederum von den Aposteln selbst belehrt wurde – so steht der heilige Irenäus geistlich in unmittelbarer Nähe zu den Ursprüngen des Christentums. Nach seiner Übersiedlung nach Gallien, dem heutigen Frankreich, wurde er Bischof von Lyon. In einer Zeit heftiger Glaubensbedrohungen durch Gnostiker und andere Häresien verteidigte Irenäus die Reinheit des apostolischen Glaubens und setzte sich mit beeindruckender Klarheit für die Wahrheit der kirchlichen Lehre ein. Sein berühmtestes Werk, „Adversus haereses“ (Gegen die Häresien), ist bis heute eine grundlegende Quelle für das Verständnis der Lehre und Innerlichkeit der alten Kirche. Seine Theologie unterstrich besonders die Einheit der Kirche und das bischöfliche Lehramt, das sich auf die ununterbrochene Nachfolge der Apostel stützt.
Der Martyrertod des Irenäus ist historisch nicht eindeutig belegt, wird aber in der Überlieferung festgehalten und ist Grund seiner liturgischen Verehrung. Der traditionelle römische Kalender ehrt ihn an diesem Tag, um das Gedächtnis seiner unerschütterlichen Treue zur Wahrheit und seinen heroischen Kampf gegen die Irrlehren der Anfangszeit wachzuhalten. Seine Verehrung führt die Gläubigen zurück zu den fundamentalen Wahrheiten der christlichen Offenbarung und zu den Wurzeln des Glaubens, wie sie von den ersten Nachfolgern Christi getreu überliefert wurden. Die III. Klasse seines Festes unterstreicht seine hohe Stellung als Verbindungsglied zwischen dem apostolischen Zeitalter und den späteren Generationen der Kirche.
