Donnerstag nach dem 5. Sonntag nach Pfingsten
Am 2. Juli begeht die traditionelle römische Liturgie (gemäß dem Kalender von 1962) das Fest der Heimsuchung Mariä (Mariä Heimsuchung). Dieser Gedenktag erinnert an den Besuch der Seligen Jungfrau Maria bei ihrer Verwandten Elisabeth, wie im Lukasevangelium berichtet wird (Lk 1,39-56). Die Heimsuchung schließt sich zeitlich an die Verkündigung des Herrn an, da Maria unmittelbar nach der Botschaft des Engels Gabriel nach Judäa eilte, um Elisabeth beizustehen, die ebenfalls schwanger war. Bei der Begegnung begrüßt Elisabeth Maria als die Mutter des Herrn, und Maria antwortet mit dem berühmten Magnificat, das bis heute täglich im Stundengebet gebetet wird. Dieses Fest hebt die Demut und Liebe Mariens hervor: Sie setzt sich selbstlos für andere ein und lobt zugleich die Größe Gottes.
Die Feier dieses Festes auf den 2. Juli geht auf den seligen Hermann von Köln im 13. Jahrhundert zurück, wurde im 14. Jahrhundert in Deutschland verbreitet und später 1389 von Papst Urban VI. für die ganze Kirche verbindlich eingeführt. Der Zeitpunkt kurz nach dem Oktavtag von Johannes dem Täufer symbolisiert die Verbindung der beiden Geheimnisse und betont die Vorläuferschaft des Täufers. Das Fest hat den liturgischen Rang eines Festes II. Klasse, was den hohen Stellenwert im Marienjahr und im geistlichen Leben der Kirche unterstreicht. Spiritualität und theologische Bedeutung liegen in der Betrachtung Mariens als Urbild christlicher Nächstenliebe und als Mutter des Herrn. Die traditionelle römische Liturgie bleibt diesem festlichen Termin treu und lädt die Gläubigen zur Nachahmung von Mariens Tugenden ein. Dies ist das Fest der traditionellen (1962) römischen Liturgie.
