Der fünfte Sonntag nach Erscheinung ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil der sogenannten Zeit nach dem Fest der Erscheinung des Herrn und steht innerhalb der liturgischen Ordnung mit besonderer Bedeutung. Dieser Sonntag ist dem Mysterium der fortdauernden Selbstoffenbarung Christi in der Welt gewidmet: Nach der weihnachtlichen Festzeit und der Feier der Anbetung der Weisen aus dem Morgenland, verweist diese liturgische Periode auf die fortwährende Gegenwart und Wirksamkeit Jesu Christi unter den Menschen. In dieser Zeit richtet die Kirche den Blick auf das tägliche Wachstum des Reiches Gottes inmitten der Welt, ähnlich dem Ausstreuen des Samens, wie es das Evangelium von diesem Sonntag oft bildlich wiedergibt.
Die liturgischen Texte und Gebete laden dazu ein, das Wirken der Gnade und die Berufung der Gläubigen zur Nachfolge Christi zu bedenken. Sie machen auch deutlich, wie Gottes geheimnisvolles Wirken oftmals dem Verborgenen gleicht, das aber unaufhaltsam zur Entfaltung kommt. Der fünfte Sonntag nach Erscheinung, der je nach Jahr im Kalender unterschiedlich gefeiert wird, erinnert daran, dass das Evangelium weiterwächst, selbst wenn Menschen es nicht immer sofort erkennen. Diese Zeit ist von einem hoffnungsvollen Charakter geprägt, der die Erwartung der endgültigen Offenbarung Christi am Ende der Zeiten sowie die alltägliche Umwandlung des Lebens durch Gottes Gnade miteinander verbindet. Darum wird an diesem Tag besonders für Treue und Beharrlichkeit im Glauben gebetet.
