Gedenkfeier der heiligen Märtyrer Sergius, Bacchus, Marcellus und Apuleius
Am 8. Oktober feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest der heiligen Birgitta von Schweden, Witwe. Birgitta wurde um 1303 in Schweden geboren und führte als Adelige zunächst ein Eheleben, in dem sie acht Kinder bekam; zu ihren Nachkommen zählt auch die heilige Katharina von Schweden. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes widmete sie sich ganz dem Gebet, den Werken der Barmherzigkeit sowie der Förderung einer strengeren christlichen Lebensführung. Besonders bekannt ist Birgitta für die zahlreichen mystischen Offenbarungen, die sie erhielt und niederschrieb; diese Schriften hatten in Europa einen großen spirituellen Einfluss und wurden von vielen Päpsten geschätzt. Birgitta gründete auch den berühmten Orden des Allerheiligsten Erlösers (Brigittinen), der bis heute in mehreren Ländern existiert. Ihr Leben ist geprägt vom unermüdlichen Einsatz für eine Reform der Kirche und vom Streben nach einer intensiven Nachfolge Christi, besonders in den Tugenden Demut, Armut und Liebe. Die Verehrung der heiligen Birgitta reicht weit über Schweden hinaus und zeigt die katholische Universalität: Als Mystikerin und Reformerin ist sie bis in unsere Tage ein leuchtendes Vorbild christlicher Hingabe. Ihre Heiligsprechung erfolgte schon bald nach ihrem Tod, und der 8. Oktober wurde im traditionellen liturgischen Kalender als ihr Gedenktag festgelegt, um an ihre geistigen Verdienste und ihren bedeutenden Einfluss auf das geistliche Leben der Kirche zu erinnern.
