Am heutigen Tag feiert die traditionelle römische Liturgie nach dem Kalender von 1962 das Gedächtnis "Sanctæ Mariæ Sabbato", zu Deutsch "Maria am Samstag". Dieses einfache Gedenken hat in der Liturgie einen besonderen Platz, da dem Samstag als Wochentag traditionell die Verehrung der Gottesmutter Maria gewidmet ist. Im Lauf der Kirchengeschichte entstand aus der Volksfrömmigkeit und aus monastischer Tradition das Bedürfnis, der Jungfrau Maria am Samstag besonders zu gedenken, da dies der Tag zwischen dem Karfreitag (dem Tod Christi) und dem Ostersonntag (seiner Auferstehung) ist. An diesem Tag verharrte Maria als einzige im vollkommenen Glauben an die Verheißung ihres Sohnes, weshalb die Kirche sie als ein Vorbild und Hoffnungssymbol in dunklen und schwierigen Zeiten verehrt.
Die liturgische Verehrung "Mariä am Samstag" setzt sich aus verschiedenen Gebeten und Lesungen zu Ehren der Gottesmutter zusammen, aber es gibt keine festen liturgischen Texte, die überall gleich wären; das Andenken ist vielmehr als eine Art Votivmesse für die Muttergottes gestaltet. Der heutige Gedenktag ist in der Ordnung des römischen Kalenders von 1962 mit Rang IV. Klasse ausgezeichnet, was bedeutet, dass er zwar liturgisch erlaubt ist, aber meist durch wichtigere Feiertage oder Sonntage verdrängt werden kann. Die Kirche will damit das tiefe Band zwischen Maria und der Kirche betonen, denn Maria ist nach katholischem Verständnis Urbild und Mutter der Kirche.
Dieses Fest macht die Gläubigen auf die fortdauernde Fürsprache der Gottesmutter aufmerksam und ermutigt dazu, besonders an Samstagen ihre Nähe und ihren Schutz zu suchen. Es unterstreicht die Spiritualität der Gotteskindschaft und das Vertrauen, das Katholiken in Maria als Mittlerin und Fürsprecherin setzen.
