Am 14. August feiert die traditionelle römische Liturgie (Kalender von 1962) die Vigil von Mariä Himmelfahrt, also den Vorabend des Hochfestes der Aufnahme der allerseligsten Jungfrau Maria in den Himmel. Diese Vigiltage hatten im älteren liturgischen Brauch eine große Bedeutung, da sie die Gläubigen durch Gebet, Buße und Vorbereitung auf die kommenden Hochfeste einstimmen sollten. Liturgisch ist diese Vigil eine Zeit der Erwartung und des inneren Sammelns: Die violette Farbe weist auf einen Charakter der Buße und des Ernstes hin, nicht in einem Geist der Trauer, sondern in freudiger Erwartung auf das Fest der leiblichen Aufnahme Marias in den Himmel.
Die Vigil von Mariä Himmelfahrt hebt die einzigartige Rolle Mariens im Heilsplan Gottes hervor. Die Kirche lädt die Gläubigen ein, über das Geheimnis der Gottesmutterschaft, über ihr unbeflecktes Leben und vor allem über ihre Rolle als erste Teilhaberin an der Auferstehung Christi nachzudenken. Dass die traditionelle Liturgie gerade diesen Tag eigens als Vigil begeht, unterstreicht die außerordentliche Bedeutung, die das Fest der Himmelfahrt für die gesamte Heilsgeschichte und die marianische Frömmigkeit besitzt. Auch wenn es keine streng gebotene Fasten- oder Abstinenzpflicht mehr gibt, bleibt der Charakter der Vorbereitung erhalten. Die Vigil bringt die Gläubigen dazu, ihr Herz mit Reue und Erwartung zu füllen, um würdig am großen Hochfest Mariens am nächsten Tag teilnehmen zu können.
