Die heilige Gertrud, auch bekannt als Gertrud die Große, war eine der bedeutendsten Mystikerinnen des Mittelalters. Geboren um 1256 in Thüringen, trat sie bereits im Alter von fünf Jahren in das Zisterzienserinnenkloster Helfta ein. Dort erlebte sie bedeutende mystische Gnaden und Visionen, die sie später in ihren Schriften festhielt. Ihr bekanntestes Werk, die „Gesandtschaft der göttlichen Liebe“ (Insinuationes Divinae Pietatis), zeigt eine innige Verehrung des heiligsten Herzens Jesu und einen starken Fokus auf die persönliche Freundschaft mit Christus.
Die Kirchenväter schätzten Gertruds tiefe Theologie, ihre Klarheit der Lehre und die reine Frömmigkeit, die aus ihren Visionen spricht. Ihre Spiritualität prägte besonders die Herz-Jesu-Verehrung und die benediktinische Spiritualität, die auf Gehorsam, Demut und Liebe zu Gott gründet. Ihre auffallende Demut und völlige Hingabe an den Willen Gottes machten sie zu einem Vorbild für viele Klosterfrauen und Laiengläubige. Im geistlichen Leben empfahl sie besonders die tägliche innere Sammlung, die Betrachtung der göttlichen Liebe und die Dankbarkeit für die erlebte Gnade.
Der heutige Gedenktag zu Ehren der heiligen Gertrud betont ihren überdauernden Einfluss auf die Spiritualität der westlichen Kirche. Durch die Feier ihres Festes wird nicht nur an eine außergewöhnliche Mystikerin erinnert, sondern zugleich ein Ideal vor Augen gestellt: ein Leben in vertrauter Freundschaft und Liebe zu Christus. Die liturgische Farbe Weiß zeugt von ihrer Reinheit und ihrer tiefen Verbindung zu Gott.
