Der heilige Gregor der Wundertäter, auch bekannt als Gregor von Neocaesarea, wurde im 3. Jahrhundert in Kappadokien geboren und spielte eine herausragende Rolle in der frühen Kirche Kleinasiens. Er empfing seine Ausbildung im heidnischen Milieu, bekehrte sich aber zum Christentum, wurde Schüler des hl. Origenes und später Bischof von Neocaesarea (im heutigen Nordtürkei). Die Überlieferung berichtet, dass er mit seinen Predigten und seinem heiligen Leben nur eine Handvoll Christen zu Beginn seines bischöflichen Wirkens zählte, bei seinem Tod jedoch fast die gesamte Bevölkerung der Stadt zum Glauben geführt hatte. Gregor war für sein tiefes Vertrauen auf Gott bekannt und galt aufgrund zahlreicher ihm zugeschriebener Wunder als „Thaumaturg“ (Wundertäter). Zahlreiche Legenden umgeben sein Wirken, insbesondere Heilungen, Gebetserhörungen und sein standhaftes Zeugnis für die Wahrheit des Glaubens auch angesichts von Verfolgungen.
Die Kirche feiert das Gedächtnis des hl. Gregor, um sein Beispiel unerschütterlichen Glaubens und seine Liebe zu Christus und den Menschen zu ehren. Der liturgische Rang als Bekennerbischof spiegelt wider, dass er den Glauben öffentlich bekannte und treu als Hirte wirkte, ohne ein Märtyrer zu sein. Sein Fest lädt die Gläubigen ein, gleichfalls fest im Glauben zu stehen und auf die Fürsprache der Heiligen auch im Alltag Wunder des Glaubens zu erwarten. Die Verehrung des heiligen Gregor ist in Ost und West tief verwurzelt, und sein Leben wurde über Jahrhunderte als Ermutigung für alle Christen betrachtet.
