Am 20. Juli begeht der traditionelle römische Kalender (nach der Ausgabe von 1962) das Fest des hl. Hieronymus Emilianus (Hieronymus Miani), Bekenners. Hieronymus wurde um 1486 in Venedig geboren und erlebte eine bewegte Jugend, geprägt vom Krieg und persönlichen Umbrüchen. Nachdem er in Gefangenschaft gelitten hatte, wandte sich sein Herz Gott zu, was er selbst als seine Bekehrung betrachtete. Später widmete er sich ganz der Sorge um Waisen, Arme und Kranke, besonders während einer Pestepidemie in Venedig und den umliegenden Gebieten.
Hieronymus gründete die Kongregation der Regularkleriker von Somascha (Somasker), speziell zum Dienst an Verlassenen und der Erziehung der Jugend; das Charisma der Nächstenliebe und des Erbarmens prägte ihr Apostolat. Seine tiefe Verbindung zur göttlichen Vorsehung und das Beispiel seiner uneigennützigen Hingabe ließen ihn bald nach seinem Tod in ganz Italien verehren. Bereits 1767 wurde er von Papst Clemens XIII. heiliggesprochen. Sein Fest wurde im 20. Jahrhundert allgemein ins Kalenderjahr aufgenommen, um das Vorbild der tätigen Nächstenliebe in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen – ein Modell christlichen Lebens, gerade in Zeiten sozialer Not. Die liturgische Farbe Weiß drückt seine Reinheit und Freude an Gott aus, und das Fest wird im Grad eines dritten Klassenfestes begangen, da sein herausragendes Zeugnis als Bekenner gewürdigt wird. Das liturgische Gedenken am 20. Juli ehrt ihn als Patron und Schutzheiligen der Waisen und Jugend – ein Motiv, das auch der heutigen Kirche weiter Orientierung gibt.
