Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 das Fest des heiligen Joseph Calasanz, Bekenners. Joseph Calasanz (1557–1648) wurde im Jahr 1557 in Peralta de la Sal im heutigen Spanien geboren und wirkte später vor allem in Rom. In einer Zeit großer sozialer Unterschiede und Herausforderungen engagierte sich Calasanz besonders für die kostenlose Bildung armer Kinder. Im Jahr 1597 gründete er in Rom die erste öffentliche kostenlose Volksschule Europas, was in der damaligen Gesellschaft als revolutionär galt. Aus dieser Initiative erwuchs später der Orden der Piaristen (Orden der Armen Regularkleriker der Mutter Gottes frommen Schulen), der sich heute weltweit der Erziehung und Bildung widmet. Besonders zu würdigen ist der unbeirrbare Glaube des Heiligen, welcher ihn durch viele Prüfungen führte – er musste Verleumdungen, Anfeindungen und innere Kämpfe im Orden ertragen, auf die er stets mit Geduld, Demut und Festigkeit antwortete. Die heutige liturgische Feier im traditionellen Kalender ehrt ihn als 'Bekenner' (Confessor), um seine treue Nachfolge Christi in Lehre und Tat hervorzuheben. Sie ist ein Zeugnis der Wertschätzung, die die Kirche den Gründern christlicher Erziehung und Fürsprechern der Armen gegenüber zeigt. Durch die jährliche Feier dieses Festes lehrt der alte liturgische Kalender, dass echte Nachfolge Christi in tätiger Nächstenliebe und Gottvertrauen besteht – ein Vorbild, das auch heute aktuell bleibt.
