Gedenktag des heiligen Hermes, Märtyrers
Der 28. August ist im traditionellen römischen Kalender (1962) dem heiligen Augustinus, Bischof, Bekenner und Kirchenlehrer, gewidmet. Augustinus wurde 354 in Tagaste (heute Algerien) geboren. Nach einem unruhigen Leben, in dem er verschiedenen philosophischen Richtungen folgte und zeitweise die Lehren der Manichäer annahm, bekehrte er sich durch das Gebet seiner Mutter Monika und die Predigten des hl. Ambrosius zum katholischen Glauben und empfing 387 die Taufe. Als Bischof von Hippo (im Norden Afrikas) verteidigte er die Kirche gegen Irrlehren wie den Donatismus und den Pelagianismus und wurde durch seine tiefgründigen theologischen Schriften – darunter die 'Bekenntnisse' und 'De civitate Dei' – zu einem der bedeutendsten Lehrer des christlichen Denkens. Seine Lehre prägte das Verständnis von Gnade, Sünde und Erlösung im Westen anhaltend. Augustinus starb 430 während der Belagerung von Hippo durch die Vandalen.
Der traditionelle liturgische Kalender ehrt ihn als Kirchenlehrer und nimmt sein Hochfest mit weißer Farbe am Tag seines Heimgangs auf. Die Bedeutung dieses Festtages liegt in seiner Rolle als geistlicher Vater und Kirchenlehrer, dessen Schriften nicht nur in der lateinischen Kirche, sondern im ganzen Christentum einen unermesslichen Einfluss hatten und haben. Die Kirche möchte an diesem Tag besonders auf sein Beispiel der Bekehrung, die Kraft des Gebetes und seine leidenschaftliche Suche nach der Wahrheit hinweisen. Die Feier am 28. August betont die Einheit von Glauben und Vernunft sowie die Barmherzigkeit Gottes, wie Augustinus sie gelehrt und gelebt hat.
