Samstag nach dem 13. Sonntag nach Pfingsten
Am 29. August feiert die traditionelle römische Liturgie (im Kalender von 1962) das Fest der Enthauptung des heiligen Johannes des Täufers. Johannes, der letzte der Propheten des Alten Bundes und unmittelbarer Vorläufer Christi, wurde wegen seines Mutes und seiner wahrhaftigen Predigt von König Herodes gefangen genommen und schließlich enthauptet. Die Evangelien berichten, dass Johannes Herodes Antipas offen die unerlaubte Ehe mit Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders, vorwarf. Durch den Einfluss von Herodias und nach der berühmten "Tanzszene" ihrer Tochter Salome, wurde der unerschrockene Prophet im Gefängnis enthauptet. Die Kirche ehrt Johannes nicht nur am 24. Juni, seinem Geburtstag, sondern auch an diesem Tag, an dem er als Blutzeuge für Gerechtigkeit und Wahrheit gestorben ist. Die Feier der Enthauptung betont insbesondere seine Rolle als Vorbild des Martyriums, seine Unerschrockenheit im Eintreten für das göttliche Recht und seine Treue zu Gott bis in den Tod.
Die Entschlossenheit und Selbstlosigkeit von Johannes hat in der kirchlichen Tradition viele inspiriert, insbesondere jene, die für den Glauben Zeugnis ablegen mussten. Sein Fest am 29. August wurde bereits im 5. Jahrhundert an seinem angenommenen Grabmal in Sebaste (Palästina) gefeiert und breitete sich in der gesamten Christenheit aus. Die Wahl dieses Datums wurde von der Überlieferung bestimmt, die an die Überführung seines Hauptes und die Verehrung der Reliquien erinnert. Im traditionellen römischen Kalender wird dieses Fest als Fest III. Klasse gefeiert und ruft uns dazu auf, Christus wie Johannes mutig und ohne Kompromisse zu bekennen.
