Am 29. September feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (Missale Romanum 1962) das Hochfest der Weihetag der Kirche des heiligen Erzengels Michael, ein Fest ersten Ranges. Dieses Fest ist keine bloße Erinnerung an einen Heiligen, sondern bezieht sich konkret auf die Weihe einer den heiligen Erzengel Michael geweihten Basilika an der antiken Via Salaria in Rom, deren Ursprung bis ins 5. Jahrhundert zurückgeht. Das Fest wurde rasch übernommen und gewann in der gesamten abendländischen Kirche große Bedeutung, da der heilige Michael als Fürst der himmlischen Heerscharen und besonderer Schirmherr gegen die Mächte des Bösen verehrt wird.
