Am heutigen Tag feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest des heiligen Raymund Nonnatus, Bekenners. Raymund Nonnatus wurde Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts in Katalonien geboren; sein Beiname "Nonnatus" (der Ungeborene) rührt daher, dass er mittels Kaiserschnitts nach dem Tod seiner Mutter zur Welt gebracht wurde. Schon früh zeigte er eine tiefe Frömmigkeit, die ihn dazu führte, dem Mercedarierorden beizutreten – einem Orden, der sich der Befreiung von Christen verschrieb, die von Mauren gefangen gehalten wurden. Raymund widmete sich mit großer Hingabe dieser Aufgabe: Er setzte sein Vermögen und seine Freiheit für die Freilassung von Gefangenen ein, sogar so weit, dass er sich selbst als Geisel anbot, um andere zu retten. Während seiner Gefangenschaft erlitt er schwere Misshandlungen – laut Überlieferung wurde ihm der Mund mit einem Vorhängeschloss verschlossen, um ihn am Predigen zu hindern. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus der Gefangenschaft wurde er von Papst Gregor IX. zum Kardinal ernannt und starb bald darauf, vermutlich im Jahr 1240.
Raymund Nonnatus wurde bald nach seinem Tod als Heiliger verehrt, insbesondere als Schutzpatron von Schwangeren und Gebärenden sowie der Gefangenen. Sein Lebenszeugnis steht für Opferbereitschaft, barmherzige Liebe und tapferen Dienst für die Armen und Unterdrückten. Der traditionelle römische Kalender ehrt ihn am 31. August, einem Datum, das wahrscheinlich an seinen Todestag oder einen frühen liturgischen Festtag erinnert. Das Fest wird als III. Klasse gefeiert, was seine Bedeutung als Bekenner und Ordensheiliger im Leben der Kirche unterstreicht.
