Am 31. Juli feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (Ausgabe von 1962) das Fest des heiligen Ignatius von Loyola, Bekenners. Ignatius wurde 1491 im Baskenland geboren; nach anfänglicher militärischer Laufbahn führte ihn eine schwere Verwundung zu einer tiefen geistlichen Umkehr. Während seiner Genesung entdeckte er das geistliche Leben und entwickelte die berühmten Exerzitien, durch die er viele Menschen zu einer erneuerten Christusnachfolge anleitete. 1534 gründete er mit Gefährten, darunter Franz Xaver und Peter Faber, die Gesellschaft Jesu (Jesuiten), die sich in besonderer Weise der Verteidigung und Ausbreitung des katholischen Glaubens verschrieb, besonders durch Bildung, Mission und seelsorglichen Einsatz. Der Heilige war ein herausragender Erneuerer der Frömmigkeit seiner Zeit, ein Lehrer für das Leben aus dem Evangelium inmitten der Herausforderungen der Moderne, und hatte großen Einfluss auf die Gegenreformation. Sein Gedächtnis wird am 31. Juli gefeiert, dem Tag seines Heimgangs im Jahr 1556. Die traditionelle Liturgie ehrt ihn als "Bekenner", da er durch sein Leben ein mutiges Zeugnis des Glaubens ablegte, aber kein Märtyrer war. Sein Fest steht auf dem Rang eines Festes III. Klasse und wird mit weißen liturgischen Gewändern gefeiert. Die Kirche sieht in ihm ein Vorbild der persönlichen Umkehr, der apostolischen Tätigkeit und der Treue zur Kirche in schweren Zeiten.
