Am 4. August begeht der traditionelle römische Kalender (Vetus Ordo Missae, 1962) das Fest des heiligen Dominikus, Bekenners. Dominikus wurde um 1170 in Caleruega, Spanien, geboren und war ein Mann von tiefer Frömmigkeit und außergewöhnlichem Eifer für die Verbreitung des Glaubens. Besonders bekannt ist Dominikus als Gründer des Predigerordens, der Dominikaner (Ordo Praedicatorum, OP), den er 1216 vom Papst bestätigt erhielt. Seine Ordenstätigkeit entstand als Antwort auf die Herausforderungen der Zeit, insbesondere durch die Ausbreitung von Häresien wie des Katharismus, die er mit Predigt, Bildung und einem vorbildhaften Leben bekämpfte.
Der heilige Dominikus zeichnete sich durch eine große Liebe zur Wahrheit und einen demütigen Lebensstil aus. Er war beständig im Gebet, besonders im Rosenkranzgebet, das eng mit der Spiritualität seines Ordens verknüpft ist, auch wenn die Ursprünge dieser Beziehung erst später festgelegt wurden. Dominikus' Wirken beeinflusste maßgeblich die theologische Bildung der Kirche und prägte Generationen von Gelehrten und Missionaren. Im Jahr 1234 wurde er heiliggesprochen.
