Am 5. August feiert der traditionelle römische Kalender (1962) das Fest der hl. Maria Schnee (Sanctæ Mariæ Virginis ad Nives). Dieses Fest erinnert an die wunderbare Gründung der römischen Basilika Santa Maria Maggiore, einer der ältesten und bedeutendsten Marienkirchen des Westens. Der Überlieferung nach soll die Gottesmutter im 4. Jahrhundert einem frommen Ehepaar sowie dem Papst Liberius erschienen sein und angekündigt haben, dass auf dem Esquilin in Rom an dem Ort, an dem Schnee fallen würde, eine Kirche zu ihren Ehren erbaut werden solle. In der Nacht vom 4. auf den 5. August fiel, entgegen aller Wahrscheinlichkeit, tatsächlich Schnee auf diesen römischen Hügel, woraufhin Papst Liberius den Grundriss der Basilika in den Schnee zeichnete. Auch wenn manche Details dieses Wunders legendarisch bleiben, zeugt das Fest von der tiefen Verehrung der Gottesmutter als Schutzpatronin und geistige Mutter der Christenheit sowie von der Verwurzelung der Marienfrömmigkeit in der Liturgie der römischen Kirche.
Die Basilika Santa Maria Maggiore ist heute ein Mittelpunkt der römischen Liturgie und ein bedeutendes Wallfahrtsziel; ihr Patrozinium erinnert zugleich an die gnadenvolle Fürsprache Marias und an das Wirken Gottes in der Geschichte der Kirche. Die Liturgie dieses Tages hebt besonders die Reinheit und Milde der Jungfrau Maria hervor, die als "Schnee" symbolisch vergegenwärtigt wird. Das Hochfest im traditionellen Kalender hat den Rang eines Festes III. Klasse und stellt damit besonders die Beziehung zwischen Gott, der Jungfrau Maria und der Kirche in den Mittelpunkt. Die bis heute andauernde Verehrung zeigt den gläubigen Katholiken den Weg der Demut, Reinheit und vertrauensvollen Hingabe an Maria. Dies ist das Fest des traditionellen römischen Kalenders von 1962.
