Heute feiert die traditionelle römische Liturgie (Kalender von 1962) das Fest des heiligen Kajetan, Bekenners. Der heilige Kajetan (italienisch: Gaetano di Thiene) wurde zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts geboren, in eine Zeit großer innerkirchlicher Reformbedürftigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Umbrüche. Nach einem Studium des Kirchenrechts in Padua empfing er die Priesterweihe und widmete sein Leben vor allem der Fürsorge für Arme und Kranke sowie der geistlichen Erneuerung des Klerus. Gemeinsam mit drei Gefährten gründete er 1524 den Orden der Theatiner (Congregatio Clericorum Regularium), um eine spirituelle Erneuerung in der Kirche herbeizuführen: Armut und Liebe zu Christus, persönliches Gebetsleben und Seelsorge gingen Hand in Hand. Kajetan war besonders durch seinen Einsatz gegen die weit verbreitete Laxheit und Weltlichkeit seiner Zeit bekannt; selbst ein Leben der Einfachheit und des Rückzugs lebend, setzte er sich für eine Wiederherstellung des geistlichen Lebens ein. Seine Frömmigkeit und feste Hoffnung auf die göttliche Vorsehung zeichneten ihn ebenso aus wie die Förderung der eucharistischen Anbetung und der häufigen Beichte.

Die Aufnahme des Kajetan-Festes in den römischen liturgischen Kalender steht ganz im Zeichen dieser katholischen Reform und Heiligung trotz aller Widrigkeiten der Gegenwart: Er steht für das Ideal des apostolischen Lebens und den Ruf zur Umkehr. Im Vetus Ordo (1962) wird sein Fest jährlich am 7. August als Fest III. Klasse mit der liturgischen Farbe Weiß gefeiert. Sein Beispiel mahnt auch heute, inmitten wachsender Verweltlichung beständig nach der Heiligkeit zu streben und den Armen mit tätiger Liebe zu begegnen. Durch sein Wirken wurde der Weg zur Erneuerung der Kirche im Geiste treuer Nachfolge Christi augenfällig, was seinen bleibenden Platz im traditionellen römischen Kalender begründet.
