Am 8. August begeht der traditionelle römische Kalender von 1962 (Vetus Ordo Missae) das Fest des heiligen Johannes Maria Vianney, des Pfarrers von Ars, als Bekenner. Johannes Maria Vianney wurde 1786 in Dardilly bei Lyon geboren und lebte in einer Zeit großer kirchlicher Umbrüche in Frankreich, geprägt von der Französischen Revolution und ihren Folgen. Trotz bescheidener intellektueller Fähigkeiten widmete er sich mit großem Eifer seiner Berufung und wurde nach einigen Schwierigkeiten zum Priester geweiht. Als Pfarrer von Ars, einem kleinen Dorf, zeichnete er sich durch seine Hingabe im Beichtstuhl, seine Askese und sein intensives Gebetsleben aus. Sein Wirken zog bald Tausende von Gläubigen aus ganz Frankreich an, die seine Gaben der Seelenleitung, der Buße und auch Wunderheilungen suchten. Der heilige Pfarrer von Ars ist besonders als großer Beichtvater bekannt und wird als Vorbild priesterlicher Heiligkeit verehrt. Wegen seines vorbildlichen Lebens, seiner Liebe zur Eucharistie und seiner tiefen Demut hat Papst Pius XI. ihn 1925 heiliggesprochen und 1929 zum Patron aller Pfarrhirten erklärt. Der traditionelle Kalender ehrt ihn an diesem Datum, um an das großartige Beispiel authentischer Hirtenliebe in schwierigen Zeiten zu erinnern und die Anliegen der Priester der ganzen Kirche im Gebet vor Gott zu bringen. Das Hochfest im Rang eines Festes III. Klasse verdeutlicht die Wertschätzung, die die Kirche dem Wirken eines bescheidenen, aber außerordentlich wirkungsvollen Landpfarrers entgegenbringt.
