Wednesday of the 11th Week after Pentecost
Today, on the traditional Roman calendar (1962), the Church commemorates St. Clare of Assisi, Virgin, a III class feast kept on August 12. St. Clare was born at Assisi in 1193 or 1194 into a noble family, and drawn by the example and preaching of St. Francis of Assisi, she left her home secretly in 1212 to dedicate her life wholly to Christ. She received from St. Francis the monastic habit and established the Second Order of St. Francis, the Poor Clares, devoted to a life of poverty, prayer, and enclosure. Clare guided her community with great wisdom and humility for over forty years, living in radical simplicity and trust in Divine Providence. She defended her convent both spiritually and, on one famed occasion, physically, when she repelled Saracen mercenaries by displaying the Blessed Sacrament in procession. The Church celebrates her feast on this day in the Vetus Ordo to honor her holy perseverance, her founding role in the Franciscan movement, and her special patronage of those seeking poverty of spirit. Canonized only two years after her death in 1253, St. Clare continues to inspire Christians with her luminous faith and ardent love for Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist.
