Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church observes the Vigil of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast marked by prayerful anticipation on the day before the great solemnity of Our Lady’s Assumption. Vigils in the liturgical tradition serve as periods of preparation, penitence, and expectant hope, inviting the faithful to recollect themselves before celebrating a major mystery or saint’s triumph; in this case, the entry of the Mother of God, body and soul, into heavenly glory. The vigil is kept with violet vestments, reflecting a spirit of humility and recollection, rather than festive joy; this helps prepare hearts for the deep joy of the upcoming solemnity. Though not among the oldest Marian vigils in the Roman calendar, the Vigil of the Assumption became more prominent as devotion to Our Lady’s Assumption grew in the West, especially after the extension of its observance to the universal Church.
The spiritual focus of the day is one of expectant longing for the fulfillment of God’s promises in Mary, who is the model of the Church in her glory and destiny. Faithful Catholics are invited to imitate her humility, purity, and obedience, reflecting on the mystery about to be celebrated: that she, the Immaculate Mother, was taken to heaven to be with her Son. The traditional liturgical discipline keeps this day as one of penance and prayer—proper both to Mary’s humility and to the grandeur of the mystery about to unfold.
