This day, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, is the feast of St. John Eudes, Confessor. Born in Normandy, France in 1601, St. John Eudes was a priest renowned for his profound devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and for his role in the renewal of Christian life in 17th-century France. He founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the Eudists) to reform the clergy through seminary formation, and the Order of Our Lady of Charity to aid women in need. St. John Eudes worked tirelessly as a preacher, spiritual director, and writer, promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was novel at the time and would later become central in Catholic piety. His spiritual legacy is significant for emphasizing inner renewal, priestly holiness, and the importance of heartfelt love for God and neighbor.
The traditional calendar keeps his feast on August 19, shortly after his death anniversary (August 19, 1680), to commemorate his sanctity and missionary fervor, and to encourage imitation of his virtues. Given the spiritual and pastoral reforms he inspired—particularly in forming holy clergy in a troubled period for the Church—he is honored as a Confessor at the rank of III classis, symbolized by white vestments. The Church, especially in the Vetus Ordo, wishes the faithful to recall his zeal, devotion to the Sacred Hearts, and work for the renewal of Christian life.
