St Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church

Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Abbot and Doctor of the Church. Born in 1090 near Dijon, France, Bernard entered the newly founded Cistercian Order at Cîteaux with a group of relatives and friends, and soon was sent to establish a new monastery at Clairvaux, where he served as abbot for most of his life. St. Bernard's era was marked by reform and renewal in the Church, with monasticism undergoing deep transformation thanks to movements like the Cistercians, who sought to return to the primitive austerity and simplicity of the Benedictine rule.

Bernard rapidly became renowned for his holiness, theological learning, and persuasive preaching. His spiritual writings, especially on the love of God and devotion to Our Lady, shaped the interior life of countless generations and earned him the title "Doctor Mellifluus." He was influential far beyond the monastery walls, intervening in ecclesiastical disputes, preaching the Second Crusade, and serving as a counselor to popes and kings. His mystical theology, centered on loving union with God through humility and contemplation of Christ's humanity, continues to inspire Christian spirituality.

The traditional Roman calendar commemorates St. Bernard on August 20th, the date of his holy death in 1153, thus giving the faithful an annual opportunity to meditate on his example of burning charity, zeal for the Church, and deep interior life. Celebrated as a III class feast with white vestments, the liturgy emphasizes Bernard’s role both as an abbot reforming monastic life and as a Doctor, a master of spiritual doctrine whose teachings remain vital in the tradition of the Church. His enduring legacy as the last of the Fathers and a bridge between monastic and scholastic spirituality is why his memory holds a privileged place in this calendar.
