Saturday of the 12th Week after Pentecost
Today, according to the traditional (1962) Roman calendar, Holy Church honors the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, celebrated with the rank of second class. This beautiful devotion centers on the interior life, joys, and sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, emphasizing above all her pure and perfect love for God and her maternal love for all humanity. The feast complements the Sacred Heart of Jesus, drawing the faithful to contemplate Mary’s unique participation in the mysteries of Christ’s Redemption, particularly through her spiritual union with her Son, her faithful pondering of God’s Word, and her compassionate suffering alongside Jesus at the Cross. While the veneration of Mary’s Heart has ancient roots in Christian piety, its public liturgical feast is relatively recent, officially established for the universal Church by Pope Pius XII in 1944, originally set for August 22.
The timing of this feast in the traditional calendar, on the Saturday after the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost, reflects a close association with the octave of the Assumption, highlighting Mary’s singular privilege and holiness as both Mother of God and model for the faithful. The white liturgical color expresses Marian purity and joy. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart has gained even greater prominence in recent centuries, especially following the apparitions at Fatima, where Our Lady exhorted the world to conversion and consecration to her Immaculate Heart. In venerating her Immaculate Heart, the faithful are invited to imitate her trust, humility, and unwavering love for God, asking her powerful intercession for the conversion of sinners and for peace in the world.
